# Kith and Ronnie Fieg, From Stock Boy to Store Empire

> Three pairs of Asics, 252 of each, and a cereal bar. Ronnie Fieg turned a sneaker buyer's eye into one of the most watched retail brands in the world.

The number was 252. In 2007 Asics asked a young buyer at a New York sneaker shop to reinterpret one of its archive models, and Ronnie Fieg picked the Gel-Lyte III, a split-tongue runner most people had forgotten. He made three colorways and produced 252 pairs of each. The set, known ever since as the 252 Pack, landed on the cover of The Wall Street Journal and sold out in under 24 hours.

That is the founding myth of Kith, and unlike most founding myths it holds up. Everything Fieg has built since rests on the same skill he showed with those shoes. He knows exactly which version of a familiar thing people will line up for.

## Thirteen and on the floor

Fieg grew up in Queens and started at David Z, his uncle's sneaker store, at 13, working as a stock boy and salesman. He stayed long enough to become manager and head buyer. Buying is an underrated creative job. It means deciding what a neighborhood wants six months before it knows, and Fieg spent his teens and twenties learning that in real time, on the floor.

The Asics project turned the buyer into a designer. A run of Gel-Lyte III collaborations followed, and his name started showing up on boxes. In 2011 he went out on his own.

## 2011, Brooklyn and Broadway

Kith opened in 2011 with two stores, one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan at 644 Broadway. The Manhattan store opened on November 11, 2011. The Brooklyn store got a renovation in August 2015 that introduced Kith Treats, a cereal bar with 23 varieties of cereal plus toppings, milk options and ice cream, under a ceiling installation of 750 cast white Air Jordan 2s.

The cereal bar sounds like a gimmick. It is actually the key to the business. A sneaker store gives you a reason to visit on release day. A cereal bar gives you a reason to visit on a Tuesday, bring a friend and take a photo, and Kith Treats has traveled with the brand ever since. Supreme taught downtown New York that [scarcity could be a business model](https://quietmenace.com/culture/supreme-drop-model/). Kith added the idea that a store could be somewhere you simply hang out.

## The edit becomes the brand

By the mid-2010s Kith had dozens of collaborations behind it, and the partner list kept stretching. Adidas, New Balance, Converse, Clarks, Timberland, Polo Ralph Lauren and Harris Tweed all signed on at different points. In 2017 came Cap'n Crunch for Kith Treats and a project with Daniel Arsham. In 2018 it was Coca-Cola, Tommy Hilfiger and The Jetsons. The mix of heritage names and cartoon nostalgia is the house style. Fieg likes the brand your dad trusted and the cereal you ate before school, presented with the same seriousness.

The sneaker side never went away. Kith's New Balance work sits naturally next to the story told in our [New Balance 990 history](https://quietmenace.com/sneakers/new-balance-990-history/), and its Asics and Nike projects feed the same collector economy covered in our guide to [sneaker resale](https://quietmenace.com/culture/sneaker-resale-economy/).

In October 2017 Kith moved its Manhattan flagship to 337 Lafayette Street in NoHo, less than a minute from the old shop. The 10,000 square foot, three-story store was designed with Snarkitecture and put men's apparel, footwear with Treats, and women's apparel on separate floors. It sits on the same downtown circuit covered in our [SoHo streetwear guide](https://quietmenace.com/travel/new-york-soho-streetwear-guide/).

## Tokyo, Paris and a BMW

The international push came during the pandemic. Kith Tokyo opened in the summer of 2020. Paris followed in early 2021, inside the historic Pershing Building near the Arc de Triomphe, with 16,000 square feet over three floors, a restored Carrara marble staircase and a chandelier made from resin-cast Nike Air Max 1s, a reference to the Pompidou Center story behind the [original Air Max 1](https://quietmenace.com/sneakers/nike-air-max-1-visible-air/). Sadelle's ran the courtyard restaurant, and Kith Treats sat next to it.

In October 2020 Kith and BMW revealed a special edition of the new M4 Competition, limited to 150 units worldwide. It is the clearest example of how far the brand's name now travels. A sneaker buyer from Queens had put his logo on a German sports car.

## Courtside

On November 11, 2022, eleven years to the day after the Manhattan store opened, the New York Knicks named Fieg their first creative director, and Kith went on to shape the team's City Edition look. The role puts Kith inside the city's most loyal fan base.

The brand has kept widening. In 2024 it introduced &Kin, a line of unbranded staples, with the Summer 2024 collection. In August 2025 Kith staged its first runway show in six years at the renovated Lafayette Street flagship, presenting a Fall 2025 collection called INSTITUTION. By 2026 it counted more than 20 stores across three continents. Footwear News named Fieg its Person of the Year in December 2025. His background is laid out on [Ronnie Fieg's Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Fieg).

The Gel-Lyte III has carried Fieg's name in plenty of colorways since. The first run is still the one that explains everything else. Three shoes, 252 pairs each, gone inside a day.
