# Omega Seamaster 300M and the Watch That Remade James Bond

> A costume designer looked at a 1993 dive watch with a blue wave dial and decided a Royal Navy commander would wear it. Thirty years later he still does.

Late in GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan's Bond is trapped in an armored train with a bomb counting down. He raises his left wrist, a laser fires out of his watch, and he cuts his way through the floor. The watch was an Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300M, reference 2541.80, and the year was 1995. Bond has worn an Omega in every film since.

## A diver with a second crown

Omega had been making Seamasters since 1948, but the watch Bond picked up was new. Omega launched the Seamaster Professional 300 in spring 1993, as a three-hander and a chronograph, and it was a sharp break from the watch it replaced. The 1988 Seamaster Professional 200 had worn generic Mercedes hands. The 1993 watch brought back skeletonized hands in the old Plongeur style, cut out so you could see the dial through them.

That dial was the hook. It was blue, and it was stamped with a pattern of horizontal waves that caught light like water does. Around it sat a scalloped rotating bezel, and the whole thing rode on a five-link steel bracelet that looked engineered rather than jeweled. It was a dive watch for people who liked the idea of diving.

Then there was the extra crown at 10 o'clock. This was a manual helium release valve, the first on an Omega dive watch. It exists for a very specific person, the saturation diver who spends days in a pressurized habitat breathing a gas mix rich in helium. Helium atoms are small enough to work their way past a watch's gaskets. When the diver decompresses, that trapped gas needs a way out, or it can push the crystal off. Unscrew the valve and it vents.

Omega had argued for years that a well-built watch did not need one. A 1970s ad for the Seamaster 600 made the point that a watch proof against helium was proof against anything. By 1993 the company had changed its mind, and the valve became the detail that set the 300M apart from every Submariner in the window.

## Why a costume designer chose it

Bond started out as a Rolex man. Ian Fleming put him in a Rolex in the novels, and Sean Connery wore a Submariner in Goldfinger in 1964. Roger Moore spent much of his run on Seiko. By the time EON was rebooting the series with Brosnan in 1995, a new watch was part of a new Bond.

The credit usually goes to Lindy Hemming, the costume designer on GoldenEye. Her reasoning, as it has been reported, was character work. Bond is a Royal Navy commander and a diver who does not want to be noticed, and she was convinced that man would wear a Seamaster. Omega's own people tell a parallel story about a marketing executive who pitched the idea more than once. Both can be true.

What is certain is the watch on screen. In GoldenEye, Brosnan wore the quartz 2541.80, built on Omega's caliber 1538. For Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997, The World Is Not Enough in 1999 and Die Another Day in 2002, he switched to the automatic 2531.80, running the caliber 1120. Over those four films the watch fired lasers, launched a grappling line and set off charges. It was a better gadget than most of the cars.

## The Craig years and the 2018 rebuild

When Daniel Craig arrived in Casino Royale in 2006, he wore the 300M again, now as the co-axial reference 2220.80, alongside the newer Planet Ocean. After that the producers moved Bond into a Planet Ocean, an Aqua Terra and a Seamaster 300 through Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre.

The 300M came back in No Time to Die in 2021, in a titanium 007 Edition with a brown dial. By then the watch itself had been rebuilt. At Baselworld 2018, marking 25 years since the original, Omega released a new generation of the Seamaster Diver 300M with more than a dozen models. The dial and bezel moved to ceramic. The waves came back, now laser engraved. The date window shifted to 6 o'clock, the case grew to 42 millimeters, and the helium valve stayed at 10 o'clock with a new conical shape. Inside went the caliber 8800, a METAS certified Master Chronometer with a 55 hour power reserve and resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss.

## What it means on the wrist

The 300M has always been the louder diver. Next to the [Rolex Submariner](https://quietmenace.com/watches/rolex-submariner-history/) it looks busy, with more texture and a lot more blue. That is the appeal. It is a watch that wants you to know it has a story, and the story is a film franchise.

It also explains a lot about Omega in the 1990s and since. The brand that sent the [Speedmaster to the Moon](https://quietmenace.com/watches/omega-speedmaster-moonwatch/) learned that a movie could do for a dive watch what NASA did for a chronograph. Compare it with the working-class tool logic of the [Seiko SKX007](https://quietmenace.com/watches/seiko-skx007-diver-history/) or the vintage-flavored [Tudor Black Bay](https://quietmenace.com/watches/tudor-black-bay-history/), and the 300M sits right in the middle, part instrument and part costume.

If you are shopping for an older 2531.80, our guide on [how to buy your first mechanical watch](https://quietmenace.com/watches/how-to-buy-your-first-mechanical-watch/) covers papers, servicing and pre-owned dealers. The valve is still the giveaway. Most people who own a 300M will never go deeper than a hotel pool, and on every one of them there is a second crown at 10 o'clock, built for a diver coming up from a week at the bottom of the sea.
