The Air Jordan 11 Put Patent Leather on a Basketball Court, and Space Jam Made It Famous

Tinker Hatfield drew a basketball shoe that looked like formal wear while Michael Jordan was playing baseball. Thirty years after Space Jam, Jordan Brand is bringing the film's pair back again.

On November 15, 1996, Space Jam opened in American cinemas, five days after its premiere in Los Angeles. Michael Jordan played himself, a basketball star dragged into a cartoon world, and on his feet he wore a pair of shoes that had already caused him trouble. The Air Jordan 11 had earned him a fine, carried him to a championship, and was about to become one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made.

This week Jordan Brand begins a run of releases for the film's 30th anniversary. Complex lists an Air Jordan 1 Low and an Air Jordan 3 on Thursday, November 5, a Green Screen Air Jordan 11 on Monday, November 16, and the Air Jordan 11 Space Jam itself on Saturday, December 12. It is the fourth time the film's pair has been sold to the public, and it is a good moment to look at why this shoe, of all the Jordans, keeps coming back.

A dress shoe for the court

The Air Jordan 11 was designed by Tinker Hatfield, and it is dated to 1995. The Wikipedia history of the Air Jordan line describes three ideas that made it different from everything before it.

The first and most famous is the patent leather mudguard, the glossy band that wraps the lower part of the shoe. Patent leather was lighter than ordinary leather, it helped hold the foot in place, and it gave a basketball shoe a formal look nobody had tried before. The second was a carbon fiber spring plate, visible through a translucent outsole, which improved torque when a player twisted on the court. The third was an upper of ballistic mesh, chosen to save weight and to last.

The odd part is when it was made. Jordan was away from basketball, playing minor league baseball for the Birmingham Barons, while the shoe was being developed. When he decided to come back to the NBA in 1995, the 11 existed only as samples.

The fine and the comeback

Hatfield and Nike told Jordan not to wear the samples yet. According to Wikipedia's account, once the shoes were produced he could not resist. He wore them in the 1995 playoffs and was fined $5,000 for breaking the Chicago Bulls' rules on shoe colors. Nike made him a black, white and concord pair for the series against the Orlando Magic, and while that pair was being made he played Game 3 in Penny Hardaway's Nike Air Flight shoes.

The next season he wore the 11 all the way to the 1995 to 1996 championship. At the 1996 All Star Game he wore the white Columbia colorway and was named MVP. By the time Space Jam was shot, the shoe was already part of the comeback story, and the film put it in front of a cinema audience of children who had never seen him play. Hatfield has called the 11 his favorite of his Jordans, and Wikipedia records that it was Jordan's favorite too.

Concord, royal and the colors of a screen

There is a detail about color in this story that collectors still argue over. Jordan's pair in Space Jam was black with concord purple accents. When Nike first sold the Space Jam 11 to the public, at the end of 2000, the purple was changed to royal blue, because on television the concord had looked like royal blue. The shoe came back in 2009 and in 2016, again with royal blue, under the nickname Space Jams.

The 2026 pair keeps that tradition. Sole Retriever describes it as a copy of the 2016 retro, with style code CT8012-900 and a colorway listed as varsity royal, white and black. The upper is blacked out patent leather and ballistic mesh, the midsole is white Phylon, and the outsole is an icy blue rubber. Two small details change. The tongue carries the Jumpman Jam lettering for the first time since 2000, and the heel has an embroidered 23 where the 2016 pair had it stamped. Sole Retriever notes that Jordan's own pair in the film had a 45 on the heel.

Sources differ on the price. Sole Retriever lists $235 for adults, and Complex lists $255. Both give the December 12 date.

Space Jam's 11 on the shelves, by our count

We lined up the public releases of the Space Jam colorway from Wikipedia and this year's release coverage. The gaps are our own arithmetic.

The pattern is steady. After the first release, the shoe has come back every seven to ten years, 9 years and then 7 and now 10, each time timed to an occasion. Every generation of buyers has had one chance at a pair at retail. That rhythm is part of what keeps the shoe valuable on the resale market, where scarcity between releases does the work.

Wearing them now

The 11 is a strange shoe to wear off the court, and that is its appeal. The patent leather reads as dressy, which was Hatfield's point, and the high cut makes them heavier looking than a Jordan 1 or an Air Force 1. Keep the rest of the outfit simple and dark, and let the shine do the talking.

If you are buying an older pair, look at the translucent sole. Translucent soles tend to yellow with age, so judge pairs from 2000 or 2009 with that in mind. Check that the patent leather has not cracked at the toe crease. For more of the history, see our Sneakers section.
